About
The Kentucky Horse Park is a state park and working horse farm on the rolling bluegrass just north of Lexington, off I-75 and a few minutes from Georgetown. It is part theme park and part museum, built around the relationship between people and horses, and it also hosts major horse shows through the year.
A day here follows a schedule of short shows and talks. The Hall of Champions houses retired racing and show horses, some of them famous names, and holds shows several times a day. The Breeds Barn presents horses from around the world, the Big Barn holds draft horses and the park's working horses, and the Mounted Police Barn and Kids Barn have stall-side chats. The International Museum of the Horse and the American Saddlebred Museum cover horse history, and a horse-drawn trolley tours the grounds. Horseback and pony rides cost extra. A map with the day's schedule comes with admission, and following it is the easiest way to see everything.
Hours and prices change with the season. Through Nov. 8, 2026, the park is open daily except Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Adults pay $28, seniors 62 and up $23, students 5 to 17 $14, and children 4 and under are free, and a ticket includes the next day free. In the winter season the park opens Friday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at lower prices. It closes the eve and day of Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's. Parking is free.
Admission is sold at the Visitor Center when you arrive. Well-behaved pets on a leash are welcome on most of the grounds, though not in museum exhibits or the Alltech Arena. The park runs a campground with more than 260 sites. Downtown Lexington is about 15 minutes south, and the horse farms along the country roads around the park are worth a slow drive.
Accessibility
The Kentucky Horse Park is wheelchair accessible, with hills. Every path in the park is paved, but it is a working farm on rolling land, so expect inclines and declines from barn to barn.
The park publishes the distance from the Visitor Center to each attraction, which helps with planning. The International Museum of the Horse is 0.05 miles away, the Horse-Drawn Trolley 0.08 miles, the Kids Barn and Mounted Police Barn 0.09 miles, the Breeds Barn 0.17 miles, the Big Barn 0.22 miles and the Hall of Champions 0.27 miles. Benches line several of these routes. Two legs are harder: from the trolley to the Hall of Champions, and from the Hall of Champions to the Breeds Barn, the direct route is a narrow sidewalk with a slope. A longer paved roadway avoids it on both.
Wheelchairs are free at the Visitor Center, first come, first served. Personal scooters and power chairs are welcome, and the park has a very limited number of mobility devices to lend. Volunteers in golf carts often give rides between attractions, but that is not guaranteed.
The Horse-Drawn Trolley is wheelchair accessible, with a ramp on the back of each trolley. In the International Museum of the Horse, two elevators reach both exhibit floors, and ground-floor restrooms have accessible stalls and changing tables rated to 25 pounds.
Service animals are allowed everywhere, including places closed to pets. The park takes part in the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower program, and its staff are trained to help people wearing the sunflower lanyard, which you can pick up at the Lexington Visitors Center. Call the Visitor Center at (859) 233-4303 for help planning.
